A serious breach in Wetsap has been identified by Israeli cyber researchers, it allowed hackers to send a message to group chats, which could cause the app to collapse for all chat members. In this way, hackers could force users to delete the app, download it again, and delete all data in the group chat. WhatsApp fixed the security vulnerability after Check Point investigators reported it and recommended updating it to the latest version available in the app stores.
Wattsap has over 1.5 billion users worldwide and is considered the largest and most popular chat app today. More than 65 billion messages are sent every day, according to the latest figures.
Up to 256 members can participate in any group chat in Wetsap. Any member of the group could send a malicious message through the app website - whatsapp web. When the message is sent, the app crashes to all chat members, even those who use the version of the app and are denied any access to it again unless deleted from the device and the chat in question is deleted.
Oded Vanunu, head of product weakness at Check Point, who headed the study, said: "Wattsap is one of the world's leading communications apps for consumers, businesses and governments, so the ability to stop using it and erase the memory in conversation groups is significant ammunition for malicious players."
Check Point reported to Wattsap about its weakness last August and it acknowledged it and fixed it within days. Software update number 2.19.58 includes the patch for the aforementioned weakness. Ehren Kret, a software engineer at Wetsap, said: "We have added additional controls to prevent people from joining groups they do not want to participate in, to avoid communicating with unwanted parties."
