In a significant development, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) convened to address South Africa's lawsuit accusing Israel of genocide. The initial three-hour session focused on South Africa's claims against Israel, alleging the most serious charge of genocide. South Africa presented statements by ministers and officials to support its case.

The lawsuit, a response to Israel's actions in Gaza, also seeks temporary relief to halt the ongoing conflict. Israel, in the upcoming session, plans to dispute the presented statements.

Lior Hait, the spokesman for the Israeli delegation, labeled South Africa's claims as "hypocrisy" and "baseless and false." He accused South Africa of supporting Hamas and emphasized Israel's commitment to protecting its citizens.

The second part of the discussion is scheduled for the following day, where Israel aims to disavow the statements presented by South Africa. The proceedings come amid protests in The Hague supporting Israel and highlighting the plight of abductees.

Israel faces accusations of conducting a sustained bombing campaign in Gaza, causing extensive casualties and destruction. South Africa alleges intent to commit genocide, pointing to statements from Israeli political and military leaders.

South Africa's Minister of Justice, Ronald Lamula, urged the court to intervene and issue interim orders against Israel. He emphasized the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, with claims of widespread hunger, disease, and a deliberate disruption of humanitarian supplies.

The court registrar read South Africa's demand for an interim order, calling for an immediate cessation of military activities in Gaza and the fulfillment of obligations under the Genocide Convention.

As the hearing unfolds, the ICJ will consider South Africa's accusations and Israel's defense in a case with significant geopolitical implications. The court's decision could have far-reaching consequences for the ongoing conflict in the region.
