"Minister Haim Katz will be prosecuted subject to a hearing on suspicion of tax evasion in the amount of NIS 2.2 million," Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit officially announced on Tuesday evening.
According to the suspicion, Katz generated rental income from seven real estate properties, some of which are registered in his ownership and some of which were registered in the name of his family members. According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice tonight, the investigation material allegedly shows that between 2007-2018 Katz did not report his income from some of the seven assets at all, and another part reported partially and late in relation to the date set by law, and only after it was announced in the media that he owned these assets. Katz suspects that for 12 years he refrained from reporting late or reporting income in the amount of NIS 2.2 million.
Katz has already been charged in another case - the Equital shares case - with fraud and breach of trust, but has been granted immunity from the Knesset. In addition, the ombudsman closed another case against Katz - in which he is suspected of providing benefits to members of the IAI committee so that they can appoint Likud workers.
The IAI case against Katz was closed due to lack of evidence, but information revealed in the investigation passed to the tax authority and is at the center of another investigation that was opened against him and which became known last December.
Katz has been questioned several times in a warning on suspicion of tax evasion on rent from apartments he owns. The police findings indicate that 6.5 apartments, agricultural land and a plot valued at more than NIS 18 million are registered in the name of Katz and his wife. According to the real estate information website of the Tax Authority, since the investigation ended, one of the properties, a 6-room cottage in Shoham, has been sold for NIS 4 million. Among other things, we then revealed his interrogation by the police, in which he was asked about these issues - which were transferred to the tax authority.
The Ministry of Justice announced tonight that "The Economic Department of the State Attorney's Office announced today to MK Haim Katz's attorneys that the Attorney General is considering prosecuting him, subject to a hearing, on suspicion of tax offenses under section 220 of the Income Tax Ordinance. His right to a hearing, the hearing will be held before the Attorney General. "
The case was investigated by the Tel Aviv Tax Authority's Assessing Officer, and was handled by attorneys Tal Farjun and Moshiko Peretz from the Economic Department of the State Attorney's Office.
Advocates Noyet Negev and Yana Fogel Slutznik of the Sheinman Negev Niv law firm, representing MK Haim Katz, said: "It has no criminal aspect. All of our claims, including the fact that assets other than his own were attributed to MK Katz, will be brought in full at the hearing.
