Conflict, urgency, shouting and great disappointment: While more than a thousand backpackers are making their way back from South America back to the country, 23 Israelis remain in Lima the capital of Peru after finding no place on flights.
Four EL AL planes and another Lattam leased aircraft that took off from Cusco are involved in the complex flight of Israeli backpackers. Last night, after two El Al planes took off from Lima airport, it became clear that some Israelis had no place in the planes. It also turned out that many of those who arrived at the airport were not registered at all before flying to Israel.
Foreign Minister Israel Katz reported this morning that a total of 1,100 Israelis were rescued from Peru and 23 remained there. According to him, "they are in the care of the embassy."
In an interview, Minister Katz said: "There is no such country in the world that extracts its citizens. I appeal to all Israelis who are abroad and tell them that the flights are going to stop. Get on the flights quickly before they close. The Israelis' place is at home and I urge them to board flights now. "
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Hayat said the problem began when a large number of Israelis who did not register for pre-flight flights arrived at Lima Airport. "Airplanes boarded such unlisted ones, which created a large excess of people.
"There are 23 Israelis left who have no place and we in the Foreign Ministry will assist them. Embassy and Ambassador representatives are trying to find solutions to bring everyone back home."
"Anyone who screams and makes a noise or those who cry can be bypassed," said Nadav, one of the Israelis who remained in the field. "Everything is busy here, the ambassador is trying to help, but there is a complete mess. Everyone wants to go home already, but there is no order and it seems that all the lists we have prepared in advance are just recommendations. Everyone here does what he wants."
One of the remaining Israelis in Lima called the organization "serious failure" at the airport. He said, "We just ignored our pleas to return to Israel and said they should not take us because there was no space on the plane and it would compromise the safety of the crew and passengers."
He added: "After long hours at the airport, a bus took us to a central square and told us they would try to help us with no solution.
Hundreds of Israeli backpackers were transferred yesterday from flights from the city of Cusco to Lima, where others joined them on their way to Israel. Backpackers left the city under curfew following the spread of the Corona virus to the local airport.
The Israelis made their way out of the hotel and guest buses and buses of Peru's military and accompanied by a police force designed to open the road for them and allow them free movement.
With the intervention of Foreign Minister Katz, who spoke to his Peruvian counterpart, progress was made that allowed the Israelis to fly to Cusco to Lima and from there to Israel. The Latham plane was taken out by Amsalem Tours, and is expected to land in Israel around 6 p.m.
