On Tuesday at noon, a Palestinian terrorist stepped onto the sidewalk and bike path on Pinchas Rosen Street in Tel Aviv - while traveling against the direction of traffic. On the Ynet studio's special transmitter, MDA CEO Eli Bin said that the terrorist got out of the vehicle at some point and started stabbing people - then was shot and killed. A total of eight people were injured - three seriously, two moderately and three lightly. The eight injured were evacuated to the Ichilov and Billinson hospitals.
Police Commissioner Senior Superintendent Kobi Shabtai arrived at the scene, and the Shin Bet is also involved in the investigation of the attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also receives regular updates on the attack from his military secretary and follows the developments.
The commissioner spoke at the scene, saying that he "wants to praise the activity of the citizen who, with great courage, was able to thwart the incident and prevent the continuation of that terrorist's murderous campaign." Shabtai addressed the public, saying that he "calls for vigilance. We estimated that as a result of his activity in Judea and Samaria, the motivation and potential for an attack would increase. That's why we will also increase our forces, and we will do everything we can."
The commander of the Tel Aviv Police District, Chief Ami Ashad, said on the special transmitter that "as we currently understand, the terrorist was alone. We have no doubt that this is an attack. We are carrying out additional operations both at the scene and in the surrounding area to see that he arrived with more people." According to Eshad, "Many police forces are pouring in here to give personal security to the citizens. It's a difficult event, but right now it's in a static state."
The report of casualties on Pinchas Rosen Street was received at 13:08 at the MDA center in the Dan area. From Ichilov it was reported that all five injured people who were evacuated to the hospital suffer from injuries typical of a run-over. Earlier, the Tel Aviv hospital declared following the attack a "small incident with many casualties".
The attack took place in the shadow of Operation "Home and Garden" in Jenin, which is in its second day. Hamas spokesman Hazem Kassem called the attack "a heroic operation", and claimed that it was "the first response to the crimes of the occupation against our people in the Jenin camp". Senior Hamas official Moshir Masri said last night at a mass demonstration in support of Jenin that took place in the Gaza Strip that "the security of Tel Aviv depends on the security of Jenin." However, Hamas did not take responsibility for the attack.
Last night a 16-year-old Palestinian boy carried out a stabbing attack in Bnei Brak and slightly injured a man. The boy himself fled after the stabbing, but was caught by police bikers, and was taken for questioning. The police first announced that a suspicion of a nationalist motive was being investigated. Later, in a statement made this evening by Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai, he already called him a "terrorist" in an unequivocal way.
The boy, a resident of the Palestinian village of Fahma in the Jenin region, said after he was caught that he carried out the stabbing because of the extensive operation the IDF launched in the refugee camp. Later, the police announced that his family members, his father (53) and his brother (31), were arrested at the family home in Fahma.
