Israel is free from wearing masks. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz announced Wednesday that the obligation to wear masks indoors will be abolished on Saturday evening, April 23, starting at 8 p.m. However, it will still be mandatory to wear masks in places with a high potential for infection such as hospitals, nursing homes, and flights. Even a person who is on the road to isolation will need to wear a mask.
According to Bennett and Horowitz, the abolition of the obligation to wear masks will be possible due to the reduction in morbidity in Corona. In recent days, an average of 4,500 people have been diagnosed with corona every day, after at the height of the omicron wave, about 80,000 people were diagnosed each day. Bennett wrote on Twitter: "We passed Pharaoh, and also the Omicron. This year it was funded without masks."
The Knesset Health Committee must discuss the abolition of the mask obligation by May 1, and its authority to reverse the decision. The committee is headed by MK Idit Silman, who retired from the coalition two weeks ago.
The health system has begun discussing the possibility of abolishing the obligation to wear masks indoors after the decline in morbidity in February, following the peak of the omicron wave. The original deadline for this was April 1, in parallel with the planned transition to a state of calm that the Ministry of Health called "between the waves." In March, however, there was another increase in morbidity, attributed to the spread of variant BA.2, which is 30% more contagious than the omicron, as well as to Purim gatherings. Due to this, it was decided to postpone the abolition of the mask obligation.
The commissioner of the struggle in Corona, Prof. Salman Zarka, recently said in a conversation with journalists that it was decided to wait with the abolition of the mask obligation until the end of April, partly because of the Passover gatherings. He added that towards the end of the month there will be a situation assessment and reconsideration of the issue, and that the planned date is May 1st.
In recent days, however, there have been growing voices claiming that there is no longer any justification for requiring masks. The director of Ichilov Hospital and the former commissioner for the fight against the corona, Prof. Roni Gamzo, wrote yesterday on the hospital's official Twitter that "many Israelis traveling abroad these days are surprised to find out how the corona has disappeared in most countries. "It's time to do the right thing in Israel as well and remove the restrictions, the masks, even in closed spaces, probably for school students, in fact everywhere, because the corona today is no longer as dangerous as it used to be."
The Association of Public Health Physicians of the Medical Association noted that it is still recommended to wear masks to reduce the risk of infection. "We have already noticed that morbidity trends are changing and therefore we recommend to the public to keep the masks on and use them when needed," the union said.
The obligation to wear masks indoors has been in effect since the outbreak of the plague so far, except for a few days in June last year. The obligation to wear masks in open spaces remained in effect until April last year. Last June, the obligation to wear masks indoors was also abolished, but a few days later, the variant of Variant Delta broke out in Israel, and the obligation to wear masks indoors was quickly restored. After the abolition of the mask obligation, the only restrictions that will remain are the inspections at Ben Gurion Airport back from abroad and the isolation for the verified to Corona.
