A significant winter system began affecting Israel on Sunday and is expected to intensify through Monday, bringing colder-than-average temperatures, widespread rain and strong winds across much of the country.
Rain is forecast from the northern regions down to the northern Negev, prompting concerns about flooding, particularly in eastern and southern riverbeds. Snow is expected to fall on Mount Hermon at the height of the system, while strong westerly winds are set to sweep most areas.
Sunday is expected to remain cold and rainy, with isolated thunderstorms possible during the morning hours. Rainfall is forecast to ease gradually in the afternoon, but is expected to resume and intensify overnight, mainly in the north and central regions.
Storm Peak Expected Monday
The peak of the system is forecast for Monday, when particularly stormy conditions are expected. Strong winds will blow across much of the country, and intermittent rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in the north and center.
Authorities warn of possible flooding in low-lying areas and along the central mountain range, as well as dangerous flash floods in rivers of the Judean Desert and the Dead Sea region. Hazy conditions are also expected in the south.
Emergency Rescues Reported
The impact of the storm has already been felt on the ground. Firefighters from the Southern District on Sunday rescued two parents and their child who were trapped in their vehicle on Highway 80 after floodwaters inundated the area.
The rescue operation was carried out under challenging terrain conditions using specialized equipment. The family was transferred for medical examination and was reported to be in good condition.
Fire and Rescue Services renewed their warning to the public: “Do not enter flooded roads — this poses a real and immediate danger to life.”
Expected Rainfall Totals
According to forecasts, Jerusalem and Beersheba are expected to record the highest rainfall, with 25–35 millimeters.
Tel Aviv, Lod and Ashdod are expected to receive 15–25 millimeters, while Haifa and northern regions are forecast to see lighter totals of 5–15 millimeters.
Looking Ahead
A temporary lull is expected on Tuesday, with partly cloudy skies and the possibility of light, localized rain. On Wednesday, temperatures are forecast to rise slightly, particularly in the central and southern parts of the country.
Authorities continue to urge caution, especially near rivers, flood-prone roads and open areas, as the winter system moves through its most intense phase.
