The number of patients in serious condition, which was stable last week, rose to 751 on Sunday evening. These are 45 more severe patients than the number at midnight. Data from the Ministry of Health show that there was an increase of 31 new critically ill patients who were not vaccinated, 12 who were vaccinated and two who were partially vaccinated. Simultaneously with the increase in the number of critically ill patients, there was an increase in the number of respirators, and their number tonight stands at 157.
Meanwhile, at midnight, 4,234 Israelis were diagnosed as positive for Corona. At midnight, about 52,000 tests were solved and the positive rate was about 8.5% - the highest figure in the fourth wave.
Meanwhile, senior members of the health system announced in the afternoon the expansion of the third-dose vaccination campaign for the entire population. They also announced that from October 1, only those who are vaccinated with a third dose will be entitled to the green mark, and that the mark will expire six months after receiving the second shot.
The outbreak of the plague killed 6,989 corona patients in Israel, seven of them today. Since the beginning of the month, 511 patients have died in Israel - the highest number since February. 99% of the deceased since the beginning of the month are aged 50 and over. In addition, a man died in his 40s, two men and a woman aged 30 to 39 and a young woman in her 20s.
At the press conference, which was attended by Minister Nitzan Horowitz, Health Ministry Director General Nachman Ash, Head of Public Health Dr. Sharon Elrai-Price and Corona Projector Salman Zarka, the four announced that starting this Friday vaccinated who have passed a week since receiving the third dose will not be required to isolate Returning from orange countries. Vaccinated people who have not yet passed six months since receiving the second dose, or recovering who have not yet passed six months from the date of their recovery - or who have received at least one vaccine dose - are also exempt from isolation upon return from orange countries. However, returnees from abroad are still required to be isolated until they receive a negative answer at the corona check at Ben Gurion Airport or up to 24 hours after their return (whichever is earlier).
The third vaccine in Israel proves to be justified: Israel was the pioneer and the first in the world to decide on the booster dose, the third vaccine, which is already showing the first signs of stopping the serious illness and infections. Yet a small proportion of those vaccinated are still re-infected with the Delta strain, in what is called "breakthrough infection". why is it happening?
Pfizer and modern vaccines are considered to be the most effective of all corona vaccines: mRNA technology not only makes it possible to produce a new vaccine for each variant within a few weeks, but has also proven extremely effective against severe morbidity, mortality, and against infections. At the beginning of the epidemic, the vaccines proved to be 95% effective in severe morbidity, and 88% or more effective in preventing infections. plus. The mutations of these strains, i.e. the genetic deformities they have created, manage to evade the body's immune system, infect more quickly and penetrate cells more quickly in order to replicate.
The scientific data on the Delta species' ability to reproduce is no less astonishing (and shocking): the virus, as far as is known, is contagious a thousand times more than the original corona strain discovered in Wuhan and spread around the world a year and a half ago. Recent data that sampled the noses of patients infected with the Delta strain revealed a viral load 1,250 times higher compared to samples from the original corona strain at the onset of the plague.
So why is the vaccine effective in preventing serious illness, but becoming less and less effective against the delta strain to the point that some of the vaccinated become re-infected? First, the significant factor is the time that has elapsed since the outbreak of the plague and the start of vaccines in Israel. Vaccines against corona began here on December 20, 2020, and after about eight months - the body's immune response is apparently diminishing, requiring the third booster dose that will rekindle the level of immunity. The main reason for the extensive infections in the delta strain, stems from its great sophistication and evasion of the immune system: thanks to the mutations, the virus manages to control its attachment to the receptor across the cell of the infected person. The virus manages to "open the gate" in a receptor called ACE-2 quickly, so that the virus penetrates the cell at record speed and rushes to the cell nucleus, where the DNA is located, with which it replicates. The immune system, even that of the vaccinated, is not enough to catch the virus and eliminate it before it attaches to the human cell and opens the gate for itself, and thus the virus infects and replicates, infects more cells, and continues to replicate.
Eventually, the vaccinated immune system is able to detect the viruses that have formed in the body and prevents them from multiplying, infecting many cells and causing a serious illness. As a result, the vaccinated person, for the most part, has almost no symptoms, but is still infected - and infects others.
The effectiveness of the vaccine is much higher than the standard set by the FDA, which sought at least 50% efficacy in preventing infection and serious illness. The effectiveness of the second vaccine in preventing serious illness is 89% in Pfizer and 91% in modernity, and the effectiveness of the third vaccine is much higher.
Second, it is important to remember that the main purpose of vaccines is not necessarily to prevent infection - which depends more on the speed of virus culture, and the level of neutralizing antibodies that varies from person to person - but to preventing serious illness and hospitalizations. So do most vaccines, and so do corona vaccines, which are the only chance to stop the plague.
