32-year-old woman in advanced pregnancy died after being infected with Corona, Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem announced on Sunday morning. The doctors were unable to save the fetus.
The woman, in the 30th week of her pregnancy, was hospitalized due to breathing difficulties at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital on Tuesday, and her condition was defined as serious. Tonight her condition deteriorated into a multi-system failure. A team of experts was called to the scene, and began lengthy resuscitation attempts as well as a caesarean section in order to save the fetus, but the attempts failed and they were forced to determine the deaths of the two.
"The rescue efforts involved many partners from all over the hospital who fought for the lives of the mother and baby," the medical center said. The center also noted that "the staff at the Corona Intensive Care Unit and the experts who were called to treat the woman and the baby are in an emotional storm."
Last week, for the first time since the epidemic broke out in Israel, a fetus died after being infected with corona from its mother. The woman, who was in the 25th week of her pregnancy, felt heat and pain and a few days later stopped feeling the movement of the fetus. She went to the doctor at the HMO, where she was told she had to have a quiet birth.
The woman came to undergo the process at Assuta Hospital in Ashdod, where she was found positive for the corona virus. After the quiet birth, a test was also performed on the placenta of the fetus - which found that it had contracted the virus. This is the first case of its kind in the country, although several cases have been reported in the literature in which pregnant women have undergone a quiet birth after being infected with corona.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Health ruled that pregnant women could be vaccinated against the corona virus, at all stages. This position, consistent with both the World Health Organization's approach and the position of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, is based on the fact that there is no evidence of harm to the fetus or during pregnancy - neither as a vaccine nor recognized as a biological mechanism. The Ministry of Health also recommends that breastfeeding women get vaccinated.
The ministry clarified that for women who are planning to become pregnant, or those who are in fertility treatment, it is recommended to complete the two doses of the vaccine before pregnancy. For a woman who received the first dose and then found out she was pregnant, it is recommended to complete the second dose of the vaccine according to the usual schedule.
