Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Health Minister Yuli Edelstein announced on Friday afternoon in the Kirya in Tel Aviv the completion of the deal with the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer to supply vaccines against Corona to Israel. The agreement relates to the purchase of eight million portions to be given to four million Israelis - two portions per person. Netanyahu also said that he was working to obtain vaccines for all citizens and noted that he was trying to promote Israel as a global leader. However, he clarified that the vaccines have not yet been approved by the US and Israeli health authorities.
However, it is possible that the Prime Minister's announcement does not include an undertaking by American society to grant Israel the vaccines.
The Ynet news website reports that the agreement to be signed with the American company Pfizer on the supply of vaccines to Corona does not include any commitment by the company to supply the vaccines to Israel, but only an intention to do so "according to the circumstances." In this case, a cash advance will be refunded and paid to the company as early as next week. The advance, in the amount of NIS 120 million, will be refunded if the company decides not to supply the vaccine doses to Israel. An additional NIS 680 million will be paid in the month in which the supply of vaccines begins, if approved. The company will provide less than 700,000 vaccines a month for a year.
Netanyahu opened his remarks by saying: "This is a great day for the State of Israel and a great day on the way to our victory over the Corona. At this moment we are signing the agreement with Pfizer." He added that the vaccine in question "requires two doses per person. The aim is for the supply of vaccines to begin in January and increase in the following months. This depends on the approvals of the US and Israeli health authorities."
"We have more agreements with promising companies on the way to getting vaccines," the prime minister added. "The goal is to enable vaccination for every person in Israel without exception. I work with my friends, world leaders, to ensure that we receive the vaccine with leading countries in the world and are not pushed in line.
"I would like to thank Pfizer CEO Albert Burla for the phone calls between us. He was attentive to me at all hours of the day, even at two in the morning. I am grateful that the talks between us have led to the removal of the last obstacles and the closure of the deal, including the addition of one million doses of vaccines to the citizens of Israel. "
"Until the vaccines are received," Netanyahu continued, "and on the assumption that they will be approved, more months will pass, so we are all ordered to keep the guidelines and rules until then. Today we see the light at the end of the tunnel."
Health Minister Yuli Edelstein then said: "We are coming here with an important message, but not a sedative siren. We hope that as early as 2021, significant amounts of Pfizer's vaccine will arrive in Israel. This is a very important message, but as I said - we must not get into a situation of Complacency. The masks must still be worn, the distance maintained and all the health rules maintained. "
