Haredi demonstrators protesting against conscription into the Israel Defense Forces broke into the yard of a senior military officer’s home on Tuesday evening, triggering a wave of sharp condemnations from across Israel’s political, military and law enforcement establishments.

The incident targeted the residence of Brigadier General Yuval Yamin, head of the Military Police, who oversees enforcement against draft evasion. According to reports, protesters entered the yard while members of Yamin’s family were present. No injuries were reported.

POLICE LAUNCH MANHUNT

Police Commissioner Danny Levy strongly condemned the incident and ordered an immediate effort to locate and arrest those involved.

“Freedom of protest does not include violence, trespassing, or threats against family members,” Levy said, stressing that law enforcement would “use all available means” to bring the suspects to justice.

Police units launched searches in the Ashkelon area shortly after the break-in.

GOVERNMENT LEADERS DENOUNCE ‘RED LINE’

The Israel Defense Forces and coalition leaders quickly rallied behind Brig. Gen. Yamin.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir described the incident as a “dangerous crossing of a red line,” warning of the broader implications for military authority and rule of law.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the event a “wild attack” and demanded decisive enforcement action. Defense Minister Israel Katz labeled those involved “criminals” who must face the full severity of the law, a position echoed by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who urged police to restore order.

OPPOSITION BLAMES GOVERNMENT POLICY

Opposition figures intensified criticism, linking the incident to longstanding disputes over military conscription policy.

National Unity Party leader Benny Gantz called on ultra-Orthodox leadership and rabbinical authorities to intervene, stating that “there is nothing Jewish about such violence” and warning that failure to act could lead to further escalation.

Former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot argued that the incident reflects a broader policy failure, warning that Israel risks becoming “a country where gangs terrorize the streets.”

Former Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Yuli Edelstein cautioned that continued reliance on court rulings without comprehensive legislation could lead to “chaos,” urging advancement of a clear and enforceable conscription law.

DEBATE OVER CONSCRIPTION INTENSIFIES

Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel described the break-in as a direct consequence of what she called “distorted incentives” created by exemption policies, arguing that the current system undermines respect for the law.

Yoaz Hendel, head of the Reservists Party, took a harder line, saying that attacks on IDF officers must be met with severe consequences and linking the unrest to political backing for draft evasion.

ESCALATING INTERNAL TENSIONS

The incident underscores deepening divisions within Israeli society over military service obligations, particularly regarding exemptions for the ultra-Orthodox community.

Authorities continue to investigate the break-in as calls grow for both immediate enforcement and long-term legislative solutions to the conscription dispute.
