Thousands of people demonstrated Saturday night against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and government corruption, for the 34th week in a row. About a thousand demonstrators in front of the prime minister's residence on Balfour Street in Jerusalem and several hundred demonstrators near the Netanyahu family's home in Caesarea. These demonstrations were preceded by a series of smaller protests at intersections, bridges and interchanges across the country.
Some of the protesters reported incidents of violence during the demonstrations at the intersections. A young woman was arrested after she allegedly threatened protesters in Kiryat Ono with a plastic gun. "A girl stopped the vehicle in the middle of the intersection, and threatened to shoot the protesters. I filed a complaint with the police with the vehicle number," said one of the protesters at the scene, Avi Shmueli.
A 22-year-old Nahariya resident was also arrested on suspicion of attacking protesters at one of the city's intersections, throwing a flag and a can of drink at them - and fleeing the scene. The smashing of a car window in the town of Dvira near Be'er Sheva, verbal violence against demonstrators in Herzliya, and stone-throwing in Netanya were also reported.
In Rishon Lezion, a street brawl broke out between protesters and supporters of Netanyahu, who arrived at the Rabin junction, where several activists demonstrated. "Suddenly, Bibi's supporters came to our intersection and started tearing down flags and beating two activists who were demonstrating," said one of the protesters. "A police car has arrived and they are filing a complaint. This is the first time there has been physical violence at our intersection. We have become accustomed to cursing, but we will not pass over violence in silence."
The "Black Flags" organization said in response to the acts of violence at the intersections that "ahead of the election, when the incitement against the protesters is exacerbated by law, no one is surprised that a gun is pulled at them. We have no expectations that the defendant or anyone around him will condemn the act."
The organization, which is one of the initiators of the protest, added that "if this gun fired God forbid in the third act, they will surely accuse others as usual. This is the result of their incitement and it is precisely against this that we demonstrate.
The Movement for Quality of Government, which is holding the protest in Caesarea, said that "something fell in Israel this week - the prime minister was on trial as a defendant but has not yet been imprisoned. "Economic and health issues are so serious."
According to the movement, "only if they continue to take to the streets and demonstrate will they be able to ensure that after the election an honest, responsible and corruption-free government will be formed, which sees the public good before its eyes and not its own good." Ahead of the demonstration in Jerusalem, police deployed forces in the area of Paris Square, Gaza Street, Ben Maimon and nearby streets. Ben Maimon, Gaza, Paris Square, Agron, King George and Keren Hayesod streets were blocked to traffic, and later more streets leading to these streets will be blocked.
The demonstrators are protesting against Netanyahu's continued tenure while being charged with crimes, claiming, among other things, that he cannot separate his personal and legal good from his political decisions. The prime minister is charged with three counts.
1000 case - In the 1000 case (the benefit benefits case), Netanyahu is accused of receiving benefits worth about NIS 700,000 from businessmen Arnon Milchen and James Packer, while he served as prime minister. The main gifts were cigars, champagne packages and jewelry.
In addition, it was alleged that Netanyahu acted in favor of Milchen in three matters, in which the businessman sought his intervention: he approached US Secretary of State John Kerry to extend the businessman's visa, he approached Finance Minister Yair Lapid to extend the exemption. A tax for returning residents, and he worked to promote a merger of "Keshet" and "Reshet" - ostensibly at Milchen's request. According to the lawsuit, these acts damaged the public service's image and public trust in it. In this case, Netanyahu is accused of fraud and breach of trust.
The 2000 case (the Netanyahu-Mozes affair) deals with talks between Netanyahu and Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Noni Mozes. The person who offered the deal was Mozes, so he is accused of bribery. On the other hand, the ombudsman was also convinced that Netanyahu did not intend to complete the bribe deal, but continued the talks with Mozes to improve his coverage in the Yedioth group, and even took certain actions. In this case, Netanyahu is accused of fraud and breach of trust.
Case 4000 (Bezeq-Walla affair) The most serious case for the prime minister concerns regulatory benefits worth hundreds of millions of shekels, which Netanyahu allegedly granted to Elowitz. In return, according to the indictment, Elovich acted to skew the coverage on the Walla! NEWS, which was under his control. In this case, Netanyahu is accused of bribery.
