Prime Minister Netanyahoo  and Finance Minister Kahlon announced that they had chosen Professor Amir Yaron as Governor of the Bank of Israel. He was preceded by three candidates: Prof. Ben Zion Zilberfarb, Prof. Efraim Sadka and Prof. Mario Blecher. Netanyahu and Kahlon are interested in approving the cabinet appointment on Sunday, when the appointment will also be required for the approval of the senior appointments committee (the Goldberg Committee).

Yaron is an expert in banking and finance and teaches finance at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in the United States and has Israeli and American citizenship, and he is not aware of any significant ties he has with Israeli businessmen.
He is a Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), where he heads the Capital Markets and Economics Group. In 1994, Amir received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago.

He has been a member of the board of directors of the Aaron Institute for Economic Policy at the Interdisciplinary Center since its establishment and comes every year to attend professional conferences held at the Center, mainly in its areas of expertise - financing and risks to the financial system. In recent years he has jointly conducted with other academics a review of specialized prices research, as well as quantitative economics.

Yaron is considered a leader in financial economics, and has published in leading academic journals in economics and finance. Yaron learned of his research on asset pricing and investments. As a lecturer, his expertise is in the field of international investments and multi-national companies.

He is considered an expert on macroeconomic risks to the financial system and is expected to continue his effort to establish a financial stability committee that Flug led in her tenure without success. One of the questions raised by his appointment is how he will be able to deal with the pressures of the political and governmental system and with the management of a relatively large organization that employs some 800 people. Yaron is not considered to have much experience in monetary policy and is not an expert on Israel's economy.
In response to his appointment, Yaron said, "I thank the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance, and in recent weeks we have held in-depth discussions on the various aspects of Israel's economy and achievements, and on the ways in which we can advance the Israeli economy and society and face global and local challenges."

Yaron is a native of Israel and an Israeli-American citizen who has lived in the United States for the past 20 years, and has a BA and MA in Economics from Tel Aviv University and an MA in Economics from the University of Chicago, where he completed his Ph.D. Yaron is a professor of banking and finance at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Economic Policy and Policy Of the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya.
