More than 2.5 million Israelis - 64% of employed - were absent from work in whole or in part in April. This is evident from the data released by the Central Bureau of Statistics on Monday.
The figures published by the CBS are significantly higher than the Employment Service's reports of the number of people who lost their jobs in March-April as a result of unpaid leave (unemployment benefit) or unemployment, or Social Security data on unemployment benefit recipients. This is because the CBS data includes everyone who is absent from work, that is, also civil servants who were absent from work - even though they received a salary from the state - or those who went on vacation during Passover.
Also, the CBS Labor Force Survey, on which the data is based, was conducted in April. Thus, some respondents to the survey were sampled until April 19, before the gradual opening of the economy and the return of branches to work began. The clerk, therefore, the picture relates to what the economy has been through and less about the current situation.
The figures show that 1.530 million Israelis were absent from work during the whole week (893.7 thousand Israelis in March), of which 1.276 million Israelis were absent due to Corona-related reasons.
The number of unemployed persons who were absent from work part-week among persons aged 15 and over was 1,011 million employed (compared with 816.9 thousand missing in the previous month), of which 252.1 thousand were absent due to Corona-related reasons (305.7 thousand were absent in the previous month). The proportion of missing persons all week or part of the week due to causes related to the Corona virus was 39% (26% in the previous month).
According to the CBS, the highest rates of unemployed persons, out of all employed persons, were in the arts, entertainment and leisure (88.3%), hospitality and food services (87.3%), other services (82.4%), education (78.4%), activities Real estate (75.8%), power supply (72.8%), professional and scientific and technical services (72.4%). Of these, the high percentage of people missing from work due to Corona virus-related causes was in hospitality and food services (78.7%), arts, entertainment and leisure (73.9%), other services (69.7%), education (54.3%) and real estate activities (51.0%) .
The highest percentage of unemployed workers, out of all employed persons, was in occupations such as general officials and office workers (74.1%), engineers, technicians, agents and related occupations (73.3%), sales and service workers (71.3%), industrial and construction workers And other professional workers (67.1%). Of these, the highest percentage of unemployed persons, of all employed persons, was among those aged 65 and over - 74.7% (of which 53.2% was due to Corona-related causes), 64-60 to 73.1% (of which 42.5% was due to Corona-related reasons), Among persons aged 54-45 - 69% (of which 40.5% due to Corona-related causes), 59-55-66.2% (39.3% of Corona-related causes).
The CBS figures do not yet indicate a significant rise in unemployment. In April, the unemployment rate was 3.3% and even decreased compared to March, then 3.4%. The labor force participation rate declined slightly, from 62.8% in February and 62.7%. In March to 62% in April, severe fluctuations in this data are expected due to the effects of the Corona crisis, while the full-time (35 hours or more) of all employed persons was 78.8% (78.5% in March). Corona virus related causes were in sales and services (56.6%), engineers, technicians, agents and related professionals (45.5%), general officials and office workers (43.7%), industrial and construction workers, and other professional workers (43.1%)
