Maersk Implements "War Levy" on Container Shipments to Israel Amidst Security Concerns
Posted on Dec 8, 2023 by Ifi Reporter
In response to escalating security risks in the region, Danish shipping giant Maersk has announced the imposition of a "war levy" on container shipments to Israel. Citing a surge in insurance premiums for vessels arriving in Israel, Maersk stated that the emergency risk supplement is necessary to cover additional costs and ensure continuous service to its customers.
Beginning January 8, 2024, Maersk customers will face an additional charge of $50 for each container measuring about 6 meters in length. For containers of approximately 12 to 13 meters, the levy will double to $100.
Shabtai Cohen, CEO of Maersk Israel, acknowledged the decision, asserting the company's commitment to supporting its existing customers during challenging times. Cohen emphasized that long-term contract holders and those in strategic cooperation would benefit from comprehensive benefits and competitive prices. Notably, Maersk clarified that the war levy would not be imposed on exports from Israel.
The move comes as Israeli cargo ships, along with international vessels, grapple with security threats from the Houthis seeking to damage or take control of them. Zim, another major shipping company, previously announced a rerouting of its ships away from the attacked route in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, resulting in anticipated delays of 30-50 days for deliveries.
The impacted imports from the East include a wide range of products such as electrical and electronic items, cell phones, computers, food products like tuna, soy sauces, and fish, as well as clothing, footwear, toys, furniture, and renovation materials.
Zim has affirmed its commitment to safeguarding ships, crew, and cargo. While Zim imports via the Red Sea primarily from the Far East, goods from the USA, Turkey, and Europe usually take alternate routes. Approximately 30% of Israel's purchases currently originate from the Far East, signaling a shift in global trade dynamics.
As the situation unfolds, Maersk and other shipping companies are navigating challenges posed by the evolving security landscape, impacting global trade routes.
