Elections in Local Authorities Postponed to January 30 Amid Ongoing War and Evacuations

Posted on Dec 4, 2023 by Ifi Reporter

Interior Minister Moshe Arbel revealed that elections for local authorities, originally slated for January 30, 2024, will be postponed in areas where residents have been evacuated due to the ongoing conflict.

The Minister of the Interior highlighted that approximately 100 settlements in 14 local authorities are impacted by this decision. These include nine regional councils (Eshkol, the Upper Galilee, the Ashkelon coast, the entrances to Hermon, Meta Asher, Ma'ale Yosef, Marom Galilee, Sdot Negev, and Shaar HaNegev), three local councils (Metula, Ajjar, and Shlomi), and two municipalities (Kiryat Shmona and Sderot).

"With these authorities, it will be impossible to hold the elections on their date - January 30, 2024," stated Minister Arbel. He further outlined his plan to set a new date for the elections in these evacuated areas, taking into consideration the government's decisions regarding the completion of the residents' evacuation.

The proposed rescheduled date will be no earlier than 150 days from the completion of the evacuation. This strategic timeline aims to ensure a smooth execution of the election procedure in these affected regions, allowing for the necessary adjustments and preparations given the extended period.

This decision underscores the government's commitment to upholding democratic processes while acknowledging the unique challenges posed by the ongoing conflict and the evacuation of residents from vulnerable areas.
