The Weizmann Institute has been crowned the best university in Israel, according to the annual ranking of universities published by the American magazine US. News. In the general ranking, the Weizmann Institute won 105th place. It is followed by Tel Aviv University (172nd overall), the Hebrew University (222), the Technion (264), Ben-Gurion University (580), Bar Ilan and the University of Haifa (which share 684).
The best university in the world, according to this ranking, is Harvard University in the United States. It is followed by MIT, Stanford and the University of California - Berkeley. In fifth place is Oxford University, which is also the best university in the UK. , Followed by another delegation to the UK - the University of Cambridge, and Johns Hopkins University, which has recently become widely known for tracking patients and the dead from Corona around the world, closes the top ten.
The ranking, which is being published for the seventh year, includes close to 1,500 academic institutions from 86 countries around the world, measured by 13 categories, including research reputation, publications, conferences and international collaborations. As expected in such rankings, American universities dominate the rankings alongside the British - out of the top 20 universities, 15 are American and 4 British. In total, 255 American universities entered the ranking and 87 British universities. China also has a respectable representation with 176 universities on the list. However, the leading Chinese university, Tsinghua University, is ranked 28th overall.
The magazine also rated the various departments at universities. For example, the program for cell biology studies at the Weizmann Institute is ranked 27th in the world, while mathematics studies at the Technion are ranked 83rd. Harvard is also the leading university in biology, economics and business administration.
