Iranian attempt to harm drug maker Gilead the only company so far to produce its drug, has been granted US authorization for experimental use in Corona patients: The Reuters news agency reported Friday that Iranian hackers have been trying to break into American society in recent weeks. An Israeli cyber company was the one who discovered this, and prevented the continued hacking.
In one case, a fake login page meant to steal passwords was sent in April to a Gilead senior involved in legal matters. This was revealed from a complex version of a site that crawls malicious Web addresses that reached Reuters, where it was unclear whether this attack was successful.
As mentioned, a group of hackers linked to Iran have been carrying out a cyber attack against US drug company Gilead in recent weeks, according to a look at publicly available Internet archives conducted by Reuters in collaboration with three cyber companies.
Giliad has recently been developing the drug for the treatment of the corona virus. Recently, US President Donald Trump announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of a drug called Remedisvir developed by the virus treatment company. This matter probably explains why a development team in the company has become a target of cyber attack.
In one case, a fake e-mail page was sent to a senior member of a company involved in its legal affairs and collaborations designed to steal passwords. However, one cannot say with the attempt to divulge the information from the successful senior.
According to Ohad Seidenberg, a leading researcher at the Israeli ClearSky cyber company, this is the Iranian group's attempt to track the company's accounts by email. Other information, which was not allowed to speak in public, confirmed that the domain that delayed the servers from which the page was sent was linked to Iran.
And the Iranian delegation to the United Nations, Aliirza Mirospi, denied any involvement in the attack. "Iran is not involved in cyber attacks," he said.
At Giliad they refused to comment and even stated that the company's policy was not to discuss issues related to information security in the company
Although it is not possible to determine with certainty the name of the group's members, their goals, or whether they achieved their targets on the offensive, this is apparently indicative of Iranian efforts or factors operating on behalf of Tehran in the field. What's more, this also indicates the depth of attempts around the world to obtain information on coping with the Corona virus. Thus, in recent weeks, additional hackers groups linked to Iran have been reported trying to break into World Health Organization databases. In another case, an attempt by Vietnamese-affiliated hackers was reported on Chinese government systems.
The United Kingdom and the United States have warned during the week that hackers' groups are attacking various countries against medical corporations developing treatment for the virus. The joint statement did not explicitly mention organizations' references, but two sources involved said one of the targets was actually "Gilead."
The corona epidemic has hit intensely in Iran, where a high quorum in the Middle East is recorded. The virus that caused the deaths of some 260,000 people across the globe has led to a global race between governments, private pharmaceutical companies and researchers to develop a drug. Gilliad's accomplishments in the field led to Trump's announcement of her case earlier this month, while meeting company CEO Daniel Urai at the White House.
