The national cyber directorate is working with 50 local authorities, some near the border with the Ghaza Strip, to improve protection against cyber attacks. Erez Tidhar, head of the cyberspace guidance department at the nationa cyber drectorate, told the Knesset Science Committee that the enemy could disrupt several regional warning systems, to the point of penetrating the fence. He stressed that authorities that include communities adjacent to the security fence in the Gaza Strip are being treated personally.
For example, Tidhar noted that instructions to enter shelters and protected spaces sent via the cell phone can follow a cyber attack and turn the public out of shelters and protected spaces. "We are working to prevent such situations," he said.
This is done as part of the cyber protection unit in the local authorities, which operates in the cyber network and includes five professionals.
The Knesset Science and Technology Committee dealt with the state of cyber protection in local authorities. The head of the committee, Uri Maklev, summoned the meeting and said that due to insufficient budgets the threats in quest are not being dealt.
"The special team contacted the council members a year ago and they were asked to follow the instructions and instructions of the cyber network, but unfortunately, they did not act fast enough and only now," said Erez Tidhar, Following the ransom attack, they hastily summoned the members of the national cyber network to assist them.
Coordinator of the engineering systems at the Nazareth municipality, told the committee about the ransom attack on the municipality: "We were injured because of the fact that we will file the municipality's legal claims, so we were stuck without any backup, because we moved to a new system and the hackers demanded a ransom. So how do we pay a ransom from public funds, but we consulted the police legally, and so we did, because there was no choice, and local authorities said they had difficulty recruiting skilled personnel to deal with cyber threats at salaries of NIS 10,000.
MK Maklev said that authorities are dealing with ransom attacks and some are even paying. We need to understand how it happened and how to prevent it. Some of the authorities that have already been injured take responsibility and participate in the right process. "
"This is a critical issue and we are not hearing about the budgetary preparations of the relevant government ministries," he concluded.
