At an event commemorating the 100th anniversary of Bnei Brak, Minister Yitzhak Goldknopf of Torah Judaism he sharply criticized the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for what he perceives as reluctance to conscript ultra-Orthodox Jews, contrasting his views with those of Chief of Staff Lt. Col. Hertzi Halevi.
Speaking passionately in Bnei Brak, Goldknopf emphasized the significant contributions of the ultra-Orthodox community and questioned the IDF's commitment to their enlistment. He highlighted a reported disparity, claiming that out of 4,000 ultra-Orthodox individuals seeking to enlist this year, the IDF had allegedly rejected 3,300.
"The ultra-Orthodox are at the forefront," Goldknopf declared, defending their dedication to Torah study and societal protection. He criticized Deputy Prime Minister's remarks on equality in military service, asserting a perceived lack of fairness in government policies.
Expressing his dismay, Goldknopf also criticized the timing of the celebratory event in Bnei Brak, held amidst recent IDF funerals. Despite personal bereavement, he chose to address the gathering to honor fallen soldiers and underscore national grief.
In contrast, Chief of Staff Hertzi Halevi recently stressed the IDF's need for ultra-Orthodox recruits, acknowledging societal shifts and expressing hope for increased participation from within the community.
The ongoing debate over conscription laws, including proposals to extend exemptions for reservists, continues to stir controversy in Israeli politics, highlighting deep-seated tensions over military service obligations and communal responsibilities.
