Hundreds of people demonstrated Saturday night against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and government corruption in a number of centers across the country. The demonstrations come against the background of contacts for the formation of a government and Netanyahu's trial, which will resume tomorrow in the Jerusalem District Court. The activists marched from the Knesset toward the official residence of the prime minister.
During the demonstration, the chairman of the Movement for Quality of Government, Adv. Eliad Shraga, presented a bill drafted by the movement, which seeks to prevent those who have been indicted from being appointed to public positions, including ministers, president and prime minister. According to the movement, the bill is intended to enter into force from the next Knesset, and is therefore not retroactive or personal. MK Eli Avidar (Yisrael Beiteinu) and Meretz chairman Nitzan Horowitz, who were present at the demonstration, expressed support for the proposal.
"A Knesset member who does not sign it is corrupt himself," Horowitz said. "We should not have a problem recruiting 61, in my opinion also 80-70 Knesset members. This proposal will both make order politically and set a proper norm. This is the first thing that needs to be done in the Knesset. It is obvious."
Activists of the Movement for the Quality of Government also called for Netanyahu to be imprisoned due to his legal situation. "The grave politicization that the most sacred symbols of Israeli statehood have undergone stems from a criminal defendant who holds the country as a whole hostage, proving too unfit for the job," the movement said. "The ombudsman must send him immediately to the detention center, and we look forward to setting the hearing on the petition we submitted to the High Court on the subject - to which the state must respond by next Monday."
The "No Situation" movement said that at the beginning of the demonstration in Jerusalem, activists will read the main evidence from Netanyahu's trial, which will resume tomorrow in the city's district court. "At the end of a powerful week that emphasizes our connection to our country, a criminal defendant cannot destroy the value system on which the state has been established and founded for over 73 years," the movement said. "Fight corruption and demonstrate against a corrupt and corrupt prime minister until he leaves."
The "Black Flags" movement said that the activists were protesting in a call for the formation of an alternative government. "The citizens of the state have decided at the ballot box that they demand a change government. This is the time for the party leaders who have committed to change and hope to keep their promise to the voter," they said. "Israel has a huge economic and social crisis to deal with. We are facing enormous challenges and the time has come for a functioning government to work for the citizens and not for the ruler."
In the Horev Center in Haifa, activists of the "Protest of the People in Haifa" movement met with MK Eli Avidar (Yisrael Beiteinu), who asked the demonstrators to persevere in their protest. "He will finish his 28 days in two weeks. "If he succeeds in doing the heinous act of buying MKs who will betray his constituents and go to him - it will not take long before we overthrow them," Avidar told activists about Netanyahu. "Despair is not a work plan. "Please do not let anyone talk in terms of despair in your environment, because our despair is the fuel that drives it."
The demonstrators are protesting against Netanyahu's continued tenure at the same time as being charged with crimes, claiming, among other things, that he cannot separate his personal and legal good from his political decisions. The prime minister is charged with three counts.
In the 1000 case (the benefit benefits affair), Netanyahu is accused of receiving benefits worth about NIS 700,000 from businessmen Arnon Milchen and James Packer, while he served as prime minister. The main gifts were cigars, champagne packages and jewelry.
In addition, it was alleged that Netanyahu acted in Milchen's favor in three matters, in which the businessman sought his intervention: he approached US Secretary of State John Kerry to extend the businessman's visa, he approached Finance Minister Yair Lapid to extend the exemption. A tax for returning residents, and he worked to promote a merger of "Keshet" and "Reshet" - ostensibly at Milchen's request. According to the lawsuit, these acts damaged the image of the public service and the public's trust in it. In this case, Netanyahu is accused of fraud and breach of trust.
The 2000 case (the Netanyahu-Mozes affair) deals with talks between Netanyahu and Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Noni Mozes. In those talks, the two allegedly discussed the benefit of the prime minister's coverage of the Yedioth group, in exchange for imposing restrictions on the newspaper's main competitor - Israel Today. The person who offered the deal is Mozes, so he is accused of bribery. On the other hand, the ombudsman was also convinced that Netanyahu did not intend to complete the bribe deal, but continued the talks with Mozes to improve his coverage in the Yedioth group, and there are certain actions to do so. In this case, Netanyahu is accused of fraud and breach of trust.
Case 4000 (Bezeq-Walla affair) The most serious case for the prime minister concerns regulatory benefits worth hundreds of millions of shekels, which Netanyahu allegedly granted to Elowitz. In return, according to the indictment, Elovich acted to skew the coverage on the Walla! NEWS, which was under his control. In this case, Netanyahu is accused of bribery.
