Five people were killed on Tuesday evening in a terrorist attack in Bnei Brak and Ramat Gan, the third in Israel in a week. A terrorist was killed by gunfire, and suspicion was investigated that another terrorist was working with him. Tonight, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will hold a security consultation with the defense minister, the chief of staff, the commissioner, and the head of the Secret service. It appears that the terrorist came from the west bank.
A first investigation reveals that the attack took place in two scenes. Five people were killed in a terrorist attack in Bnei Brak and Ramat Gan. A terrorist riding a motorcycle opened fire on passers-by in two different arenas - on Hashanim Street in Bnei Brak and on Bialik Street in Ramat Gan. He was then neutralized by the police. Following the attack, Prime Minister Bennett announced that he would hold a security consultation tonight with the participation of top members of the defense establishment and the police.
MDA medic Menachem Englander said: "I live on Shaniim Street in Bnei Brak and I was at home when I heard the sounds of gunfire. I immediately went out into the street and saw in front of me the terrorist who aimed his weapon at me. Miraculously he had a weapon stop and he was unable to fire. I immediately went back upstairs, locked the door and reported it to the call center. "As soon as police arrived at the scene and secured the street, I went back downstairs, but unfortunately three men in their 30s who suffered gunshot wounds were unconscious and after medical examinations, we had to determine their deaths."
The mayor of Ramat Gan, Carmel, whose mother Hacohen called on the city's residents not to leave their homes if they are not required to do so. Eyewitnesses at the scene said at least one of the shooters was riding a motorcycle. "I clearly heard four shots and a motorcycle traveling immediately after them," Artium, who witnessed the incident in Bnei Brak, told Haaretz. "I did not understand what it was. I was sure it was explosives."
The shooting joins the attacks that took place this week in Hadera and last week in Be'er Sheva. In Hadera, two terrorists murdered two Border Police officers, Yazan Fallah and Shirel Aboukaret. Five other people, three of them Border Police officers, were injured in the attack and evacuated to Hillel Yaffe Hospital in the city. The terrorists, Israeli Arabs from Umm al-Fahm, belonged to the Islamic State (ISIS), and he claimed responsibility for the attack.
Last week, four people were killed in a combined assault and stabbing attack in Be'er Sheva. In this case, too, the terrorist, Muhammad Abu Alqian Mahura, was an Israeli citizen and a supporter of ISIS. He was previously imprisoned for security offenses and is recognized by the defense establishment as a supporter of the organization.
Palestinian terrorist organizations welcomed the attack tonight. Islamic Jihad official Ahmad al-Madall said in the wake of the attack: "This action comes after two welcome actions. It emphasizes that the stage is the stage of resistance by all means and above all the armed struggle in our lands in '48." Hamas spokesman 'Abd al-Taif al-Qa'una wrote on his Twitter account: "Iron will not be defeated but through iron, their entity will remain under the blows of the young."
This is the third attack in Israel in just one week. On Tuesday, Border Police fighters Yazan Fallah and Shirel Aboukaret, 19, were killed in a shooting attack on Herbert Samuel Street in central Hadera. Twelve wounded, including three policemen, were evacuated to the hospital in serious, moderate, and light conditions following the shooting.
